Some people claim that not enough of the waste from home is recycled.
They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement.
To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?
It is argued that a great deal of waste materials do not go under recycling procedure, and so the governments should pass some laws in order to force citizens to reverse their wrong habit of not distinguishing rubbish. Personally speaking, I believe it is an urgent issue which needs to be addressed promptly. Then any measures, such as law enforcement could be an effective solution to this ever increasing problem.
To begin with, people always react faster under pressure, so when residents find out they might face severe prosecution or high fine, overnight changes would be possible in societies. In my country, for example, fastening seat belts could not become a driving culture, unless heavy fines were imposed. Similarly, separating different waste in order to be feasible for recycling could become citizens' everyday practice after several years of law enforcement. Rubbish, such as plastic bags and packages which have altered our planet's face over the past few years could simply be recycled and not only solve the littering problem but reduce the growing pressure on earth resources. Since years of education and advertising campaign have not been able to overcome this issue, the only remaining remedy would be introducing strict laws.
In addition, tough reaction, rather than lenient one, to a wrong behavior would show how serious a situation has become. Unfortunately, many people still believe that the earth is considerably big enough to absorb all of the waste, and in contrast all information regarding waste issues are merely a bunch of exaggerated stories. However, according to scientists, materials which are not degradable in a short term, such as plastics, are occupying our space and influencing humans and animals as well as environment in everyday life. Therefore, legislation which are followed by imposing severe punishment would soon illustrate a thorough understanding of the alarming situation.
In conclusion, wastes are affecting our environment adversely and it needs a prompt measure. In this case recycling as an approach to prevent, or at least mitigate this problem should become a rule for both individuals and factories if the future of our planet matters.
