Most people agree that money cannot buy happiness. Why is happiness difficult to define? How can people achieve happiness?
In the modern era, people often struggle and do arduous work to earn under the pretext that they could be happy when they are wealthy. However, it is generally believed that happiness cannot be bought. In this essay, I shall discuss the reasons behind the challenges to finding joy and optimum ways to achieve it.
To begin with, nowadays, social media has influenced the population of every age group throughout the world. What is being shown to the public is not always reality. For example, the celebrities post their extravagance lifestyle which misleads their audience and makes them believe that contentment lies in the affluent class. Therefore, the misconception of finding pleasure in materialistic things and exorbitant gadgets such as expensive cars, watches, and mobile phones, is prevalent among mankind.
Despite the fallacious predictions of gaining satisfaction, empirical observation shows that each individual can find happiness in little joyful moments of their life. Such pleasurable moments must be cherished without comparing one's own life with that of others. Moreover, the overthinking regarding futuristic events and being stuck in memories should be avoided and the present moment should be enjoyed to the fullest. To exemplify, a recent study in psychological science shows that the incompetence to move on and being happy in current times is the major cause of depression among youth. Seen in this light, gratification could be achieved by living in the present.
Having seen the above points, it can be concluded that the popular belief of chasing wealth and monetary success is the reason behind the misconception of finding contentment. Instead, appreciating what you possess and enjoying the simple moments would be much more fulfilling.
