Dear Raveena,

How have you been? And how was your trip to Hong Kong? I’m glad you are interested in knowing the situation in India after the recent note ban. Let me tell you in detail what happened.

Just 3 days ago, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, to everybody’s bewilderment, announced at midnight that Indian currency notes of rupees 2,000, 1,000 and 500 will be banned or not accepted as a currency anymore. This move was made to reduce the Black Money circulation in the Indian markets. It was a very sudden and unexpected move which had many positive and negative repercussions. The pros of this move were that those who were the actual culprits and were stashing away stacks of money without paying taxes, were in deep trouble because they didn’t have the chance to exchange those notes for valid currency notes and would have to probably to do away with them. The cons of this move were that the common man, for no fault of his, had to que up for hours at banks to exchange their money due to which lots of them were forced to miss work or even stand in the sun without food for long durations. I also faced a lot of hardships because I had recently withdrawn some money to pay my tuition fees, which included notes of Rs. 500 and 1,000, and before I could deposit the same to the university, this news was announced, leaving me no choice but to miss classes the for the next 2 days in order to get them exchanged. The impact of this major decision by the government will be experienced by the Indian citizens for a long time to come.

It’s been quite a week here! In case you have any more questions about this, I will be more than happy to answer.

Warm Wishes,

Aditi
