For instance, in the early 2000s, Norway had one of the highest rates of youth homicide in the country, but the country's leaders recognized that imprisoning young people would not provide a sustainable solution to the problem. As a result, they implemented a comprehensive strategy aimed at tackling the underlying factors contributing to the issue. This included investment in early childhood education, after-school programs, and vocational training opportunities for juveniles. Over time, these measures proved successful.
Moreover, incarcerating minors in adult prisons exposes them to violence and abuse, causing long-lasting psychological consequences. This is particularly concerning for adolescents who are still developing their sense of self.
