Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One of the best ways that parents can help their teenage children prepare for adult life is to encourage them to take a part-time job.Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

It's very easy to agree with this statement. While I do not think that it is the absolute best way, I do agree that it is one of the best ways to help children prepare for adult life. I agree simply because it's logical. Assuming the children will grow up to be adults with jobs, taking a part-time job would allow them to gain some experience before joining a full-time workforce. In my opinion, almost any experience can be a good experience, even if at the time it seems to be a negative experience.

When you experience doing something unfamiliar, it is almost always beneficial. When you aew going to do something with which you are unfamiliar, there may be a level of worry or preoccupation. You may not know what to expect. By parents encouraging children to have part-time jobs, they are suggesting a way to gain valuable experience that will help reduce the level of trepidation their children might feel when they are out looking for their first “real” job.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the teenager will have a bad experience with their part-time job, possibly creating even more worried and trepidation regarding full-time employment in the future. I grant that that is a possibility. Perhaps they encounter an overbearing boss, or colleagues that are difficult to get along with. However, as these situations also occur with “real” jobs in the “real” world, dealing with such things in a part-time job is good practice. Perhaps with the guidance of the parent who encouraged the teenager to get the job in the first place, the teenager would be able to work through these difficult issues. In this way, a bad experience might even be a better experience than a good experience!
