9-Integrated Writing

The passage suggests that the fuel cell-based engine is better than internal-combustion engine. However, the lecturer disagrees wth it.

First, the author states that internal-combustion engine relies on petroleum which is finite and unrenewable while hydrogen fuel cell engine requires hydrogen, which can be derived in various sources. But the professor opposes it by saying that hydrogen is not easily available and not directly usable since it is hard to be obtained and stored in a pure liquid state. It is highly artificial, and have to be kept in a -253 celsius degrees to reamain the liquid state.

Second, according to the reading fuel cell engine can solve many pollution problem because it only produces water as the by-product rather than CO2. In contrast, the purification of hydrogen need to burn coals and oil. As a result, the factories will emit pollutions eventhough car does not pollute.

Third, the reaing material claims that fuel cell engine is economically competitive which more efficient in using energy. On the other hand, the speaker proclaims that it is expensive to burn hydrogen because the burning process requires platinum a rare and expensive metal which can make help hydrogen undergo reactions. In addition, there is no other cheaper metal to replace platinum which means fuel cell engine has no advantage over internal combustion engine and cannot replace internal-combustion in the near future.
