The reading and the lecture are both about the advantages and disadvantages of online degree programs. While the author of the article argues that an online degree program has many drawbacks, it is not the same degree program available in a traditional campus environment. The lecturer disputes the claims mentioned in the article. He believes that online degrees are similar to on-campus degree programs.
According to the reading passage, the online degree program does not offer one-on-one time with the professors. On-campus, professors hold regular office hours and expect to have conferences with their graduate students. The author also mentions that some professors invite their graduate students to their homes or otherwise make themselves available in semi-social settings. In contrast, online professors are unable to see their graduate students in person and, consequently, do not know them very well. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that online degree programs offer one-on-one time to the students either by mail or by phone calls, or video calls.
Secondly, the author suggests that many online graduate programs are not as challenging or as high quality as their on-campus counterparts. In fact, some courses are so easy that students are able to complete them online in one weekend. The lecturer, however, asserts that there are 20 online programs that are not easier to complete, they require time management skills.
Finally, the author puts forth the idea that online degree programs are very different as compared with on-campus degree programs. In contrast, the lecturer disagrees with the author.
