advantages and disadvantages of paper records and electronic records

The passage states that it was usual in the United States to keep patient's information in form of paper, but they decided to persuade doctors to keep these information in electronic form because of some reasons. On the other hand the lecture mentions that it is not practical really, so the speaker denies all these reasons.

First of all the passage says that storing the data in form of electronic can reduce dramatically the costs while the papers need a lot of space to serve them. although the professor has another significant point of view, she explains that it is unlikely to keep all information in form of electronic, because doctors need to save some of these crucial information by paper as back up.

Second, the passage tells that keeping the data as electronic form can prevent medical errors. The lecture has another opinion, it says that electronic records and electronic data cannot eliminates the errors, because most doctors are not up to date, and they used to write hand notes instead of electronic notes. As a matter of fact, they believe that their poor hand writing is acceptable for them.

Finally, the passage clarifies that electronic records can spectacular aid medical research by making it easy to approach all information. Beside that, the lecture explains that there are tremendous privacy laws for accessing to information. Thus, it would be fundamentally a hardship process, because accessing to these records has striking prestige. Another point is that some patients block their information, so it is impossible to access all data.
