Essay topics:

An airship is a type of aircraft that flies using a very large balloon filled with a lighter-than-air gas. Airships were an important means of air transportation before the 1940s but are little used today, having been largely replaced by airplanes and helicopters. However, some aeronautical engineers believe that airships could become popular again because they offer a number of advantages over airplanes and helicopters.

Airships are a form of air transportation vehicles using an air balloon filled with gases lighter than air which used to be popular up until mid 20th century but are rarely used these days. The text cites three main reasons on how airspaces can go mainstream again but the professor casts doubt on these reasons.

The first reason for the likelihood of airships going mainstream is its vertical lift. Airplanes and helicopters use fuel to both take off and stay afloat while airships only use fuel to move horizontally. However, the lecturer opposes this claim by saying that although they consume less fuel but the balloon is filled with gases that have their own problems. One gas which can be used in the balloon is Hyderogen. Hydrogen is not safe enough since it catches fire easily. Helium, another gas used for the balloon, is safer than hydrogen but is harder to obtain and does not provide as a good of a lift as hydrogen.

Second, the airship can be used in locations where airplanes cannot access. This can be attributed to the property that they do not need runways for take off, since they take off and land vertically. Although, helicopters have similar feature but they are not able to carry as much load as airships. The lecturer also opposes this view. According to him, in inconvenient spaces, airships have problems staying steady. When loading they have to come down and rise in confined spaces but due to wind loads, they cannot stay still.

According to the text, airships can be used for replacing satellites. Because airships can lift vertically without excess fuel, they can be a good substitute to satellites. However, the professor thinks that airships are not ready to replace satellites. He says that airships can only rise 14 km above ground and need a lot of fuel to counter wind in order to stay balanced.
