Although dinosaurs are considered as the strongest creatures that have ever lived on Earth, they were not strong enough to defy extinction. Since there are no definite data that could identify the cause of extinction, many theories have been suggested. These three theories are the most convincing ones.
The first hypothesis is the asteroid theory. This theory gained support from the discovery of an element called "Iridium," which was extracted from a layer of rock. Iridium is a rare element on Earth. In contrast, it is commonly found in meteorites. This led scientists to claim that iridium was scattered widely when a giant asteroid hit the Earth during the time dinosaurs were alive.
The second hypothesis is the ice age theory. It is well known that the glacial period comes every 20,000~40,000 years on Earth. Supporters of this theory say that the glacial period adversely affected nature and influenced the lives of dinosaurs. As many dinosaurs were not equipped with strong thermoregulatory systems, they were vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
The third hypothesis is the bird evolution theory. Some people argue that dinosaurs evolved into modern birds that we are now familiar with. When researchers compared the body structures of contemporary birds to those of dinosaurs, their characteristics showed striking similarities. Many anatomical features of modern birds, including their skeletons, hearts, and lungs, show high complexity similar to those of dinosaurs.
The dinosaurs were considered as a strongest creatures on earth but were extinct. Many theory has been put forth for the extinction of dinosaurs. The passage explains the three theories while the lecturer points out flaws in this theories.
The first theory mentioned in passage is the asteroid theory. It suggest that dinosaur were extinct due to a giant asteroid hit the earth because Iridium was extracted from earth's surface. Iridium was a rare element on Earth and also found in abundance in meteorites, so it is believed that it might be due to an asteroid hitting the Earth. While the lecturer opposes it by stating that Earth's core is rich in Iridium. Also, he thinks that the inner core of Earth contains magma and due to its eruption, it thrown out Iridium. So, he thinks iridium was found due to eruption rather than mete
The second theory mentioned in the passage is Ice Age theory. According to this theory, the glacial period affected adversely on the nature and lives of the dinosaur as they were not equipped with the thermoregulatory system. The lecturer finds this theory unconvincing. He thinks that the climate before was very hot. Also, ice caps at north and south pole would have submerged due to high sea levels in past. So, the glacial period is a root cause for the extinction of species according to the lecturer.
Bird theory is the last theory proposed in the passage. According to this theory, people believe that dinosaurs are evolved into birds due to fact that many characteristics are similar of modern birds to that of dinosaurs. But, the lecturer thinks that if dinosaurs are similar to birds, they might have survived the extinction by flying away. The lecturer thinks that dinosaur has a limited range of movement which is not common to modern birds. Hence, this theory is also not reliable.
Hence, the passage mentions three theories about the possible extinction of dinosaurs which the lecturer opposes by providing convincing facts and evidence.
