Essay topics:

Altruism is a type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for that of another animal or group of animals. Altruism is the opposite of selfishness; individuals performing altruistic acts gain nothing for themselves.

Examples of altruism abound, both among humans and among other mammals. Unselfish acts among humans range from the sharing of food with strangers to the donation of body organs to family members, and even to strangers. Such acts are altruistic in that they benefit another, yet provide little reward to the one performing the act.In fact, many species of animals appear willing to sacrifice food, or even their life, to assist other members of their group.

The meerkat, which is a mammal that dwells in burrows in grassland areas of Africa, is often cited as an example. In groups of meerkats, an individual acts as a sentinel, standing guard and looking out for predators while the others hunt for food or eat food they have obtained. If the sentinel meerkat sees a predator such as a hawk approaching the group, it gives an alarm cry alerting the other meerkats to run and seek shelter. By standing guard, the sentinel meerkat gains nothing—it goes without food while the others eat, and it places itself in grave danger. After it issues an alarm, it has to flee alone, which might make it more at risk to a predator, since animals in groups are often able to work together to fend off a predator. So the altruistic sentinel behavior helps ensure the survival of other members of the meerkat’s group.

The author and lecture are both talking about the altruism which is the selfless act of helping others without getting anything for themselves. The author believes that altruism is even found in animal like meerkat as one of the member guards all other group member without eating food and making one more susceptible to predator. The lecturer challenges the statement made by the author. She is of the opinion that the altruism is not actually totally right from this perspective as new finding suggests that the one which guards other member of meerkat had already been full of stomach and when predators arrive they escape first and even in case of human, one who donate the kidney gets appreciation still it is non-material worth.

Fisrt of all, The author suggests that human being acts as a altruism by donating body parts like kidney to the family members as well as to the strangers one.It is mention that this activity is not benefial for them but this is for the another who gets the body parts as this activity of helping other is called altruism. This argument is challanhged by the lecturer. She says that one donates their body part is not as selfless act as they get the appreciation from the society that may be the sense of self worth. Furthermore, He argues that this act of donating kidney acts as a non-material worth for them.

Secondly, the author contends that in the meerkat group, some of the member of that group keep guarding the group member by standing outside staying hungry but others who find food, they search for food and eat too. The lecturer, however, rebutes this by asserting that the new finding suggests that the one guards being staying outside already had lot of foods and being full of stomach. He elabortes this by mentioning that one who search the food are being more in danger of predator and only eat if they find food.

Finally, it is stated in the article that the one guards the other member of meerkat are being more in danger to the predators. The author eastablishes that one who guards has to fly alone and are being more in danger and it is a selfless act as when predator arrives it gives alarm and fly away. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the recent finding suggests that the one one guards the group members actually fly immidaitely after giving alarming signal and is more safer than the one who search food. He puts forth the idea that the one who search food are in more easily available to the predators.
