Anting in birds and some possible benefits of it.

Essay topics:

Anting in birds and some possible benefits of it.

The text discusses anting, a behavior in birds and by providing some information, states some probable advantages birds may take from this action. On the other hand, the professor goes against all the explanations of the author and states that this behavior is completely unclear, and none of the claims of the text is convincing.

First, the text claims that one of the prone benefits of anting may be its effect on relieving of skin irritations. It also includes that in the summer, birds have more skin irritation and it proves why they do anting more often in the summer. In contrast, the professor refutes this claim and mentions that anting may seem relevant to relieving skin irritation, but it may have some other reasons. He also states that this happening may be due to this point that ants are more active during the summer, and as a result, it is easier for birds to capture them. He also adds that the increase in the number of skin irritation and anting in the summer may be just a coincidence.

Second, the author states that anting may act as a chemical shield and defense against parasites. On the other hand, the professor rejects this claim and explains that if these two actions were related to each other, we could expect less parasites in birds which do anting compared to those which do not. He continues that none of the observations has proved a significant decline in the parasites in birds which do anting.

Third, as it is claimed by the text, anting by releasing formic acid and reducing the bitter taste of the ants, can have a role in food preparation. However, the professor casts doubt on this point and mentions that this hypothesis is doubtful. He provides some more information by stating that some birds rub bitter taste things such as soaps and do not even eat them. In this way he states that the act of anting does not have any clear connection to eating habits of birds and states why the claim made by the author is not correct.
