Archeological lost artifacts
The reading explains that in the 20th-century archeology faced three major problems in Britain. The professor in the lecture then explains the new guidelines created in the 1990s by Britain to address each of these problems.
First, the author states the major problem was that valuable artifacts were lost or destroyed because of construction projects. The professor explained Britain responded to this problem with a powerful new guideline. Before construction projects are started, the size must be examined first. If the site has archeological value, then builders, archeologists, and government officials must get together to discuss how the artifacts will be preserved. The builders will either build around the site or excavate and document the artifacts discovered. This is how Britain solved this problem.
Second, the author states that financial support for archaeological research was inadequate which prevented hundreds of archeological projects from happening. The professor explains that the government responded to this problem with a guideline that requires the construction company to pay for all the expenses. The construction company must pay for the initial examination as well as all work to preserve the artifacts. This is a new source of funding besides government funding, that will allow a far greater range of archeological projects to occur. This solved the problem of financial support.
