benefits of high taxes on unhealthy products
In this set of materials, the writer strongly postulates the importance of preventing people from smoking and unhealthy food and provides three benefits of employing taxes to such products to endorse it's idea. However, the professor states that the implication of taxes on unhealthy food to avoid them is even more challenging and gainsays each of the reason mentioned in the reading.
First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting that high taxes on unhealthy products will discourage people to buy these products extensively and as a result, their health will improve. On the other hand, the speaker explains that people will not stop purchasing cigarettes or processed food in spite of high taxes. They will eventually end up by buying cheap and low quality food which will ultimately increase the risk to their health. Moreover, they will have less money to spend on healthy food after paying high taxes.
Next, the professor in the lecture further points on details that no matter what the income is, the person addicted to cigarettes, tobacco and fast food is still going to purchase them to satisfy his needs. In fact, high taxes will be a great burden on people with less wages. So the idea seems to be unfair with low income people. These claims refutes the writer's implication about employing taxes on unhealthy products is fair with the people who do not use such things. Also, the burden of medical cost will be shifted to people who have unhealthy lifestyle.
Ultimately, the article wraps it's arguments by declaring that the money obtained from taxes on cigarettes will increase the budget of government for medical and public welfare significantly. Consequently, it will be beneficial for the whole society. On contrary, the speaker in the lecture refutes the point by showing accuracy of the author that by doing so the government will become solely dependent on the revenue obtained from taxes. Government will not impose laws to ban such unhealthy activities for instance, smoking in public places by means of not loosing the extra income they are getting.
