Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons

Low Gravity

To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth.

Mining Valuable Metals

Next some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth.

Easy to Reach

Finally, asteroids are a good option for colonization because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically come within or near Earth's orbit Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction.

In this set of materials, the reading and the lecture both discuss whether or not the stabilizing a colony on asteroid consider a successful one. While the reading states that making the asteroid as a habitat for human is better option than making the same on moon or Mars. However, the lecture refutes this, by saying that this is not a practical option and opposes each a nd every reasons stated by the writer.

First and foremost, the reading claims that the gravity on asteroid are much lower than other planets which make the landing and taking off easy process. furthermore the writer says that the carrying equipment will be effortless too. However, the lecture argues that even in low gravity the human will suffer from many medical issues like loss bone density and muscle mass even in few months mission. According to the professor the harmful health effects will be tremendous in long term trio like the one to asteroids.

Second, the reading makes the argument that mining metal like gold and platinum which are rare on earth will be lucrative to colonists and send them to earth. On the other hand, the lecture counters this point by saying that it seems profitable but in fact this is not the whole picture. The professor clears that there are no guaranty to sell these precious metals in high price on earth to get benefit and support the colony. Furthermore, if the quantity increase this definitely will lead to increase the metals supply and in turn reduce their marketing price.

Lastly, the reading asserts that the asteriods are easy to reach than other planets and moon because their orbit are became near the earth so the porcess of go and back will be more affordable. On the contrary, the lecture refutes this claims by pointing out that even if it is easy to reach but definitely it is not in return. Moreover, the professor says that the orbit reach close to earth and then be more away from it. Indeed, the orbit will not stay near and eventually, the getting back from asteroid will be challenging.
