Brochs
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in the functions of brochs. To begin with, the reading says that the brochs are built for defensive purpose because they are tall and thick. However, the listening argues that defensive forts often have some opening, such as window, so people can shoot arrows and to keep enemies in distances. Otherwise, their enemies can easily break down the doors or set the house on fire when they are close to the house. In other words, since these brochs do not have open windows, it is unlikely that they are built for defensive purpose.
In addition, the reading suggests that brochs are used to store grains or food inside. Whereas, the listening asserts that this is unlikely to be true. Researchers had found some water tanks and fire places inside the brochs. Water tanks can create a humid condition which is not going to keep the grains fresh. Besides, it is extremely easy to set on fire when the dusts of grains gather. Therefore, the evidence of fireplace are not an evidence to such grain storage.
Last but not least, while the reading implies that brochs are built for the leaders and chieftains to live, while the listening indicates that is explanation is incorrect. These brochs are located isolated, it is impossible for these leaders to build their house at an isolated place. To say it differently, leaders usually live with a groups of people, because the purpose of the leaders is to govern their residents. Moreover, there are many brochs located at a same place. It is unlikely that there are several leaders live together and govern the sane area.
