Buying a Franchise

Essay topics

The reading and the listening are both talking about whether or not to buy a franchise. The author of the reading thinks that a franchise is a good start-up for an unexperienced business owner. However, the professor refutes each of the statements presented in the reading.

First, the author points out that the first-time business owner can buy supplies from the franchising company instead of finding supplies himself. On the other hand, the professor argues the reading that buying goods from the parent company often costs a lot more than simply in the supermarket. So, franchise is not money-saving as its popular image shows.

Second, the author contends that the owner who buys a franchise can save on advertisement based on the original company's assistant. The professor casts doubt on this point. She says that although the original manufacturer truly does advertise their products, it does not advertise on the owner's business specifically. That is, the practical profit is divided to trivial parts to countless franchise owners under the franchising company.

Thirdly, the author mentions that unexperienced franchise owner can have high security rather than start an independent business. The professor challenges the validity of this claim. She mentions that buying an independent business from the preowner has twice security than simply buy a franchise. To conclude, rather than having a franchise, people should try to buy the old independent business.
