Chevalier's memoir
The reading passage states that the Chevalier wrote a long memoir that is a valuable historical source for European society but some of the critics have doubts about the accuracy of the memoir and provide some details for proving the points. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubts on the points made in the reading.
First, considering the article that Chevalier claims that he was very wealthy at the younger age and spent a great deal of money there on parties and gambling. But the reading claims that there is evidence that in that situation he borrowed money from a Swiss merchant. In contrast, the professor in the lecture contradicts the idea and further explains that this evidence is not mean that he was poor man and maybe he just borrows some cash before he sold some of his products.
Second, the reading passage claims that the accuracy of his conversations with famous peoples is under doubt and it's not so reliable that everything wrote very accurate after a long time. Admittedly, the professor justifies the information presented in the reading and makes the point that some witnesses give prove about accuracy of conservation and he also wrote details of conservations after meetings.
Tired, critics point out he claims the story about escaped from prison just for making the reading enjoyable. In the same way, the speaker talks about government documents that show in that event there was a hole in the ceiling and they repair it.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about Chevalier's memoir. It is clear they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
