Essay topics:

Edmontosaurus migration toward the south during cold winters

The reading claims that Edmontosaurus which were one of the most common North slope dinosaurs would survived the harsh winters such as coldness and darkness, by migrating toward the south of America to more hospitable habitats. However, the lecture finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.

The author argues that the Edmontosaurus were herbivores which means they fed on vegetations. So it seems viable they migrated south to find food at least some parts of the year because of cold and dark winters in North slope winter. Conversely, the lecture brings up the idea that this reason is highly questionable due to the fact that they did not have to migrate towards south because they lived one hundred million years ago which at those times temperature were warmer and so much vegetation could be found in summers. Thus they could feed on the dead form of those plants in winters.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that edmontosaur were lived and migrated in hers like other animals such as caribou and buffalo due to all the skeletons were have been excavated from the same site. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that animals could live in hers for completely different reasons. Some animals like Roosevelt elk, which is a large plant-eater like edmontosaur live in a herd for extra protection, and they do not migrate whatsoever.

Finally, the reading asserts that edmontosaurs had lots of body strengths, which could make them physically capable of migrating for long distances. For instance, they were able to run very fast and reach a speed of 45 kilometres per hour, which could make them capable of travel about 1,600 kilometres southward. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that some of these edmontosaurs were not able to go through this migration because of their young age. Juvenile edmontosaurs could slow down others, and adults could not abandon them behind.
