The article claims that in order to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, a international organisation has started issuing certificate to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resource and recycling material.Companies can advertise their product as ecocertified. But companies believe that wood companies in the United States will not buy these products. Their are several reasons given to support this claim. However, professor disagrees with this claim and provides necessary reasons to support his statements.
First, the reading claims that american customers are exposed to so many advertises that they would not value this label. They might not give attention to this new label when their are already lot of such kind of advertises available in market. The professor refuses this point by saying that not all Americans treat all advertises the same. They do have knowledge to differentiate between different independent consumer agencies. He states that Americans do care about the internal reputation of these ecocertified labels.
Secondly, the article posits that ecocertified wood is expensive. In order to earn this label, a wood company should pay to have its business examined by certification agency. This cost gets added to the amount customer pays. However, professor believe that, even though wood are expensive with this label, Americans do consider the difference in the amount to be paid for local wood and certified labeled wood. If the extra amount rounds up to less than 5% of the amount to be paid extra then people don't mind choosing the ecocertified wood. And also, Professor thinks that people are more concerned about environment and their surrounding. They will definitely encourage such labeled woods to preserve environment.
Thirdly, the reading states that pursuing certification would makes sense only if these companies have market outside the country. If they sell these products only in home nation then they wont get much of the sails. Professor opposes this statement by arguing about foreign competitions faced by this local companies. Professor believes that if these internal companies do not show required amount of interest on marketing their goods inside the country then it might probable that other international companies start selling the similar certified woods in United States. Hence, domestic companies should try to improve their market in United states itself before marking abroad.
