Essay topics:

In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers by advertising their products as ecocertified. Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive ecocertification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons.

First, American consumers are exposed to so much advertising that they would not value or even pay attention to the ecocertification label. Because so many mediocre products are labeled 'new" or improved,'' American consumers do not place much trust in advertising claims in general.

Second, ecocertified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because in order to earn ecocertification, a wood company must pay to have its business examined by a certification agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers-American consumers tend to be strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified wood products. Accordingly, American wood companies will prefer to keep their prices low rather than obtain ecocertification

Third, although some people claim that it always makes good business sense for American companies to keep up with the developments in the rest of the world, this argument is not convincing. Pursuing certification would make sense for American wood companies only if they marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the case—American wood businesses sell most of their products in the United States, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with the merchandise.

The passage and the professor in the audio discusses about whether the wood companies in America will adopt the eco- certification practices or not. Many wood companies in the world are getting themselves as ‘eco-friendly ’certified for conserving the environment. Moreover, such practises will attract the customers globally too. The reading suggests that American wooden companies would not follow this practise whereas the professor in the audio rebuts each of the point stated in the reading and gives three reasons to it.
First, the professor posits that Americans do not treat all the advertisements same. They believe that there is a difference between the advertisements made by the public agencies and the private independent agencies. Furthermore, he explains that since, all the advertisements related to ‘eco- friendly’ wood companies are claimed by the independent agencies, thus many Americans will come in favour of it. However, the article states that American do not pay attention to the advertisements as there are many mediocre products which are labelled as ‘new’ or ‘improved’ and thus a certification would not help the American wood business to grow.
Secondly, everyone cares about the price, who doesn’t! But if the comparison between the prices is quite less then, Americans would definitely value the product over the money. Again, this contradicts what is stated in the reading as it posits that Americans are far too much motivated with the price of product and hence would certainly buy cheaper wood instead of expensive certified wood.
Thirdly, foreign competition can hamper the American wood business as all the other companies are getting certified. Though a business mind-set is needed but wood companies in American have to change their tactics as they sell their wood within the nation and not globally. On the other hand, the reading refutes by saying that certification would only make sense if American companies marketed their product abroad.
In conclusion, Americans will pay attention to the advertisements and prefer certified ‘eco-friendly’ wood as they survey suggests that a lot of Americans do care about the environment. Furthermore, they care about the value of the product rather than the price and lastly if American wood companies will not follow the certification practises foreign wooden companies would likely to overtake the American market.
