Franchise Business
The author and the lecturer compare franchise companies and independent businesses. In the reading passage, the author talks about the benefits of being a franchising owner. The lecturer, however, presents the disadvantage of the respective.
First, the author talks about the benefit of having reliable suppliers. He says that franchise owners do not have to take the risk to find their suppliers because many companies already have their own contact. The professor denies the fact. She mentions that it is not worth having the supplier of the company because they sell expensive products. Further, she mentions that the company forces the franchise owner to buy the product from their specified merchants. Even though there are other alternatives present in the market which are much cheaper than the product which owners buy from the brand suppliers.
Second, the author states that franchise owners save a lot of money by not spending on advertisements. Evidently, owners sell an already popular brand and get the benefit of advertising paid for by the parent company. The professor refutes the argument. She mentions that franchising brand take 6 percentage of money from the owner for advertisement. Moreover, owner will not get the benefit from such a marketing strategy because their own business is not being advertised, it is only for the company product. In addition, the money that the owner gives to the company is much more than the money they could have spent on the commercial for their individual business.
Lastly, the author says that franchises provide security. He states that the failure rate of big companies is less than small businesses. Additionally, franchising owners start to get profit within one year which is not possible in the case of their own business. The lecturer refutes the idea. She states that security is not permanent. Further, the speaker talks about a suggestion in which one can also buy an independent business from an owner. As a result, it will be more successful than opening a franchise.
