government is implementing higher taxes on cigarettes
The reading is about implementing higher tax rates on cigarettes and unhealthy foods. The lecturer challenges the points made by the author and she thinks that it's very damaging to people's health and also ruins them financially in order to make the government rich which can be explored in the following essay.
First of all, the reading states that imposing higher taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy foods can make people back from their unhealthy habits and obesity respectively. However, the professor states that by increasing taxes on cigarettes makes people buy much cheaper quality cigarettes which contain highly carcinogenic agents than high prices cigarettes. Additionally, she mentions that when there more taxes on unhealthy products people won't stop buying them instead they will be left with a little amount of money which might be helpful for them in several means. This clearly shows that implementing higher taxes are not going to make people healthier.
Furthermore, the author says that collecting taxes from all the people equally is fair enough because they can be saved and used when they are in need of medical purposes. On the other hand, the lecturer posits that some people argue that these taxes are unfair because when a person smokes a pack of cigarettes a day then even the low-income people are suffering in paying these taxes. This clearly illustrates that it will affect low-income people seriously.
Finally, the reading mentions that cigarettes increase the revenue of the government and also can be used for the public in various projects they build. The professor refutes this and explains that this point has a serious downside. On top of it, she states that the government will depend on these taxes and also they don't want to lose it in the long run. she also adds that the government is not being forceful on people to eliminate habits by keeping the billboard or any flyer at public parks and many private spaces like "DO NOT SMOKE" or "SMOKING KILLS", because they don't want to lose income. From this, we can figure that the government instead of making people aware of harmful products they are not taking any measures.
