Humans have long been fascinated by elephants the largest land animal in the modern world

Essay topics:

Humans have long been fascinated by elephants, the largest land animal in the modern world.

Both the reading and the lecture talk about the fascinating facts about elephants. In the passage, the author mentions a few common believes about them. While in the lecture, the professor casts doubt on them as they are not scientifically accurate. She thinks these behavior patterns are due to other causes.
The author states that the old elephants are aware of their approaching death. In the lecture, the professor argues that the behavior of old elephants when they are old comes from their inability to chew well. She says that the old elephants own weaker teeth compared to younger ones. As a result, they need to find the vegetations which are softer than what the rest of elephants are eating in the herd. Consequently, the old elephants need to leave the herd in order to find food, and they will end up near water where the vegetation is green and soft. As they are old, they might die when they are near the water, which is called the elephants' graveyard.
Furthermore, the author mentions that the elephants have artistic ability, which is exclusive to humans. The professor refutes that by pointing out that the elephants are not aware of what they are doing. She says the elephants are being tamed by the humans to do particular brush strokes while they do not know clearly what they are doing.
Finally, the author in the reading asserts that the elephants are afraid of mice. The professor argues that fear is because the mice are unfamiliar creatures to the elephants. The elephants who have not seen a mouse before will find it peculiar and think there is a threat. As a result, they would react to it. On the other hand, the elephants which have been kept in a zoo won't show any reaction when encountering a mouse.
