Integrated essay
The reading and the lecture are both about reading literature. The author of the reading believes that today people replaced literature with music and movies which decrease reading culture. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that decreasing the reading cultures is not a result of music and movies.
Firstly, the author points out that reading books, especially literature stimulate people`s imagination, empathy, and comprehension. It is mentioned that by reading less literature people missing a lot of important benefits which reading provide. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that this is not true because there are a lot of other things that stimulate people`s imagination and creativity. She says that there are a lot of quality articles, books, and magazines about science and other things who play a role as literature.
Secondly, the author contends that not reading literature is not the main problem. The major problem is what people reading. The article notes that today people are reading self-help books which are the best sellers with poor content and intellectually demanding. Moreover, instead of reading a good book people watch TV, movies, listen to music and read an article on the internet. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that there are a lot of novels with good content and literature is not the one which increases the people`s intellect. She elaborates on this by mentioning that music and movies are not wasting of time. They have not lowered the intellectual instead of that they speak more directly.
Finally, the author states that the trend of reading less literature today is a result of not investing and supporting literature writers and of the poor standards of today`s readers. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the lack of readers is probably results of authors faults.
