The reading and lecture are both about the school organization system, and whether they are ideal or not. The reading states about the traditional schooling system and explains different levels in it. The lecturer talks about some of the weakness of this conventional schooling system.
First, the author states that school organization is the same for every student. Each student first goes to elementary school, then junior secondary, and finally high school. If a student fails in any grade, h/she would have to repeat that grade. The lecturer claims this as the most obvious weak point of this system. He states that this organization doesn't take into account differences in individuals. In other words, each student has a different rate of development. Some become physically and socially mature early and easily climb the grade ladder. Whereas, others do not grow at the same speed, fail to understand what's being taught and for this reason, some have to repeat the grade.
Second, the reading mentions that when a student gets passing grades or more h/she gets promoted to the next higher class, and if this is not the case then the student has to repeat that grade. This point is rebutted by the lecturer. He thinks this method of promotion does not show actual learning. Those students who have to repeat a grade get bored by studying the same material which further results in higher dropout rates. Moreover, he points out that group discussion, which are used as tools to grade the students, measure the ability of the group and the individual and thus is not an ideal way of measuring ability.
For the aforementioned reasons, the lecturer thinks that European school organization system is not an ideal one.
