The lecturer talks about how buying a franchise is not as safe as mentioned in the passage. The lecturer puts forward three points that challenge the arguments in the passage.
Firstly, upon buying a franchise, the business owner is coerced to buy only specific goods and services. These specific goods and services are usually over priced and the business owner is not allowed to purchase other goods and sevices even if they are of the same quality but are cheaper than the specified goods and services. This policy would preclude the business owner from making higher profits which contradicts the passage.
Secondly, the business owner has to pay upto 6 percent of total sales towards advertising the franchise. However, the franchise does spend this money on advertising the owner's business but rather spends it on adverting the brand in general. An independent business owner will require to spend half that money to advertise his own business. Thus, it is clear that a business owner would save more money in advertising his own business than when he buys a franchise. This is in contradiction to the passage which states that business owners can save money on advertising when buying a franchise.
Finally, security is the biggest issue when purchasing a franchise contrary to what has been stated in the passage. It is safer to buy an already existing independent business from a previous owner. Such an investment is twice as likely to succed as buying a franchise. This challenges the passage that states buying a franchise is more likely to succeed.
