Essay topics:

North America is a continent that is completely within the Northern Hemisphere and almost entirely in the Western Hemisphere. It is the third largest continent and has the fourth largest population in the world. It was previously thought that the first people to reach North America were Asians, but new evidence has shown that they were actually Europeans.

First, scientists found spear points of similar shape and style in both Europe and North America. These spear points were large and fashioned like a sharp blade. In contrast, the spear points found in Asia are very small and don't share many similarities.

Also, European bones have been found that can prove the earliest people were European. Bones analyzed from a 24,700 year old skeleton of a child have provided DNA that was able to be extracted showing genes found primarily in European humans.

Finally Europeans could have crossed the Atlantic Ocean while it was covered in ice during the ice age. An ice pack stretched from France to North America during the glacial maximum. This provided the opportunity for them to travel similarly to the Inuit tribes of Alaska. They could haul their boats onto the ice at nights to rest and hunt seals and other ocean dwelling creatures for food and warmth.

Recently there has been a ton of debate regarding the first people to reach North America, the third largest continent and has the fourth largest population in the world. The author in the passage claims that it was Europeans who first reached North America, not the Asians and provides three evidences to prove his claim. The lecturer in the listening is quick to point out the flaws in writers claim and provide evidence from recent research, which disprove that Europeans are the first to reach North American land.

To begin with, the author argues that spear points found by scientists in both North America and Europe are similar in shape and style, they are large and fashioned like sharp blade. Whereas, the spear points found in Asia are very small, unlike the ones found in North America. This specific argument is challenged by the professor, when he says that spear points are an independent process and the reason they are similar in structure in both Europe and North America is because it was developed for the hunting of large mammals.

Furthermore, the author believes that 24,700 year old bones found in Northern America, which showed similar genes to Europe humans on analysis of its DNA , can prove that earliest people in North America were in fact Europeans. The professor, however, rebuts this by mentioning that several other bones were found which showed no link to European humans, and the evidence provided by author has only 33% chance of being true.

Finally, the author posits that during ice age it was possible for Europeans to cross the Atlantic ocean to reach North America, by hauling their boats on ice at night for rest and hunting seals and ocean dwelling creatures for food. The professor disputes this claim by pointing out that no boat or fishing tools artefacts found in North America show any form of European history. Without any conclusive evidence for the migration it is imprudent to assume Europeans reached North America during ice age by crossing the Atlantic ocean.

To sum up, both the writer and the lecturer hold conflicting views regarding the first people to reach North America. It's clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
