One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that t

Both the reading and the lecture are about the ways to use the turtle excluder devices (TED) to avoid the harm to turtles by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. The reading provides three reasons to criticize TEDs. However, the lecture casts doubt on the reasons in the reading and states three reasons for support.

First, the reading claims that one boat traps only one turtle in a month but many of boats lose shrimps where they can escape from nets. The lecture opposes this idea by saying that there are thousands of shrimp boats accidentally catch one thousand turtles. It is a big problem for turtles since the population for turtles is small. TED cannot think individually for every shrimp boats that they lose shrimps from nets.

Second, the reading states that there are alternative methods of protecting sea turtles such as time limiting of the nets staying underwater. This point is challenged in the lecture by explaining that the government does not have a chance to monitor every single fish boat while their nets are underwater. the government is only able to check before they leave if they have TEDs.

Third, the reading posits that for larger species TEDs are not an effective way. The lecture says that while TEDs are mainly small it does not mean that the design of TEDs can be rearranged for larger specious. After the design is updated for them it would not be a problem anymore.
