Essay topics:

One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that this problem can be solved through an invention called a turtle excluder device (TED) that is incorporated into the nets. A TED provides a passage through which the turtles can escape. However, TEDs have been criticized for several reasons.

The reading and the lecture are both about using TEDs to save turtles lives. The author of the reading provides three solutions to using TEDs to solve problems of turtles. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article.

First of all, the article suggests that one shrimp boat accidentally catches about one turtle every month. It is mentioned there abundant of shrinks boat which causing damage to turtles. The argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says it is not about an individual one, but the whole turtle population is affected by this.

Secondly, the writer contends that limiting the time of nets could be effective the TEDs.The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that it's impossible to track time of nets since thousands of shrimps boat are out of the sea. TEDs were easy to operate and could be more reliable.

Finally, it is stated in the article that escapes passage of TEDs is too small for large turtles. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out it can be easily modified, the producer could make large teds to solve the problem.
