The passage discusses a painting which is said that is a painting of a well know artist Jane Austen and provides some reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the professor provides his own reasons and explains why he is against all claims in the text.

Firstly, the text says that the painting is endorsed by Austen family and it can prove that this painting is exactly a picture of her which her family gave permission to use it as a portrait of her. The professor refutes this claim by saying that, the first time which the painting was authorized was 70 years after Austen's death and the people who endorsed this painting had never seen her in real, so we cannot be sure that the painting belongs to her and has endorsed exactly.

Secondly, the text claims that all details of Jane's face in the painting is clearly like the sketch which her sister, Cassandra, made and the painting clearly resembles the sketch. The professor goes against this point and says that, this painting may be for a relative of Jane. He states that Jane had a large family and this painting may be the picture of one of her cousins or one of the teenagers in her large family.

Thirdly, the passage explains that however we cannot see any date or sign on the picture, but there are some good evidences which prove that this painting is made by Humphrey who is probably the painter who Jane's family may hire, and also he was active during the time Jane was a teenager exactly like the girl in the picture. However, the professor casts doubt on this claim and refutes it by saying that the only reason we can say this picture is made by this painter is based on the style of the painting and also based on the stamp on the back of the painting, we can be sure that these stamps was available when Jane was 27 not a teenager, why so William leg who sold these stamps just sold them when Jane was an adult not a teenager.
