The Plain of Jar in Laos is a site with numerous large stone jars. It has long been an intriguing question for scholars what these jars were used for. However, archaeologists have come up with several hypotheses for this elusive problem. Three significant theories are discussed in the passage to shed light on the mystery of jars. In contrast, the professor doubts whether the theories proposed by the writer are true.

First, researchers believe that Laotian people have used these stone jars for the process of fermentation of food or drinks. Adding to that, local people also endorse this theory by mentioning that the jars were devised by kings at first, to ferment beverages for special occasions like great victories. In contrast, the professor thinks that this conviction is not true because they could use less expensive clay jars to ferment beverages or foods, instead of stone jars which are much more time-consuming and expensive to create. Adding to that, clay pots are as effective as stone ones when it comes to fermenting beverages.

Secondly, the writer contends that jars may have been used for storing water. These jars have been found near trade routes, which suggests that traders passing through the area used to drink the water of stone jars, especially in dry seasons. Despite this notion, the professor argues that most trading routes were near rivers or streams, so traders had plenty of other sources of freshwater. Thus, this fact eliminates the necessity of jars being used as water storages.

Lastly, the essay depicts the jars as possible ancient burial sites, where Laotians buried their dead alongside other artifacts like jewelry and glass beads. So, these jars served the purpose of the tomb for ancient people. On the other hand, the professor thinks that this claim has serious problems since ancient tombs are usually covered with some kind of protection to defend the dead body against bad weather or rain. However, no kind of protection can be seen in the Plain of Jars tombs. So, without any covering, they are unlikely to be used as tombs.
