Essay topics:

The populations of many fish species are rapidly disappearing due to overfishing and pollution. There are many ways to address this issue, and one of the most popular is aquaculture, also known as fish farming. Raising fish in a controlled environment has many advantages in addition to providing a stable supply of food. Here are some of the most important reasons that aquaculture should be widely adopted.

First, aquaculture can help to protect coastal areas. The majority of fish farms are built on or near coastlines as they require clean seawater to operate. So, the farmers are very careful about keeping their environment clean. In addition, the farms often take up land that would otherwise be used for industry or housing, both of which generate large amounts of pollution. By occupying this land, fish farms would keep the coastal areas cleaner.

Second, aquaculture is good for local economies. Many of the regions that are best suited to aquaculture are located in poor countries that have high unemployment rates. Fish farming is intensive work that requires many people to function smoothly. Much of the labor is manual and unskilled, so anyone can do it with a little training. Therefore, creating fish farms would provide much-needed jobs to the communities where they are built.

Third, aquaculture relieves pressure on wild populations of fish. Many species of fish have declined to dangerously small populations, so they must be protected from going extinct. Creating a new and dependable supply of fish would reduce the need for fishing. If enough fish farms are constructed, they could replace the wild fish that are currently being caught and consumed. That would allow wild fish populations to recover and prevent them from being overfished again.

The author and the lecturer discuss the advantages and disavantages of aquaculture. The author of the reading passage provide three reasons to explain the ways in which aquaculture will helpful to ecosystem and provide employment. The lecturer disagrees. He gave three counter arguments and believes that fish farming might have adverse effects.

According to the reading, the author says that aquaculture will help to protect coastal areas. Earlier the coastal areas had large number of industries and housing which increases the pollution, while aquaculture will ensure that enviornment is clean. The professor believes that there is a flaw in the author argument. He claims that dramatic change in ecosystem will change the habitate drastically. He gave the example of magroove forest which are present in the coastal region to prevent erosion. If it is removed it will have harmful consquences.

Secondly, the author suggests that building fish farming will help the community to solve the problem of unemployment. He feels that the fish farming require unskilled work and require large man power for smooth functioning. Hence, this will provide more employment opportunities. However, the the lecturer asserts that the aquaculture will reduce the traditional jobs like fishing in the coastal region, which is promary job for many of the people. Therfore, it will eventually reduce the number of jobs and increase unemployment.

Finally, the author claims that fish farming will reduce pressure on wild population for fish. Establishing the fish farms will create a new and dependent supply of fish and hence reduce the need for farming. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that aquaculture will increase the pressure on wild fish and eventually lead to increase in number of fish.
