the pros and cons of the usage of corn ethanol

Essay topics:

the pros and cons of the usage of corn ethanol.

Both the reading and the lecture discuss the pros and cons of the usage of corn ethanol. The reading passage gives three advantages of using corn ethanol. However, the lecturer casts doubt on each of these claims.

First of all, the reading claims that corn ethanol uses less energy. As a result, the car gives better mileage, and consumers have to pay less for fuel. In contrast, the lecture insists that if corn ethanol uses less energy and gives more mileage to a car, then also the price of biofuels will increase because while growing corn, harvesting and transporting these corns need lots of energy and this increase their cost more than gasoline.

Secondly, the reading asserts that American companies are switching from gasoline to corn ethanol because they are the most significant source of corn globally, while petroleum is not available in the U.S., and if they use gasoline, they have to import from foreign countries. So, the import tax will increase the cost of gasoline. However, the lecture argues that the price of corn ethanol is also touching the sky because if we increase the growth of corn ethanol, this increases the demand for land, and there will be more competition between the farmers. This will hurt the economy more than the import tax.

Finally, the reading states that corn ethanol is echo-friendly as compared to gasoline; it releases carbon dioxide and support in global warming. On the other hand, the lecture points out that the increase in the farming of corn ethanol will expand the land, and this increase in carbon dioxide emission and helps in disrupting the global layer.
