Essay topics:

The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.
One option is direct removal of salt from the lake's water in special desalination facilities. Water from the lake would be pumped into the facilities and heated. This would cause the water to evaporate into steam, while salt and other materials dissolved in the water

The listening and the reading have a debate on the various approaches to decrease the salinity of the lake. The reading claims that we can remove the salt from the lake in some special facilities, dilute the salt level with more ocean water and constructing walls to divide the lake. However, those are contradicted by the listening.

Firstly, the author states that salt level can be reduce dramatically with the help of desalination facilities. However, this point is refuted by the professor, who believes that it will result in severe health problems. After evaporating, the fresh water has transformed into steam but other materials are left. Salt is not the only part of the surplus, but also some toxic chemicals will be left behind. Consequently, if the chemicals fly into the air and people breath them, it will bring about serious healthy problems for people.

Also, for the reading's idea that ocean water can be employed to dilute the salt water, the speaker holds a different view. In order to have enough ocean water, some constructions, like water pipes, are going to be finish. The pacific ocean is at least 100 km away from the lake. So, the local government may fail to have enough resources to carry out this plan.

Lastly, the writer shows an opinion that constructing walls to divide the lake is an ideal option. But the lecturer puts forward that this construction won't be effective for a long period. The plates' movements are happening every minute and earthquakes are highly likely to happen at any time. So if it happens one day, it will bring fatal destruction to the walls. If the wall finally collapse, then the salt will move from the salty part into less salty part.

In a nutshell, by giving all these three seasons, the listening successfully goes against the reading article.
