Essay topics:

Summarize the main points in the lecture, and then explain how they cast doubt on the ideas in the reading passage.

The reading and the lecture are both about reasons why a population of the sea otter had declined in the past few years. The author of the reading believes that environmental pollution and attacks by predators are the major reasons why the number of sea otter had declined. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that environmental pollution was not the major reason for the sea otter decline.

Firstly, the author points out that on the Alaskan coast were found evidence from industrial chemical pollution such as oil rigs. It is mentioned that in the water samples from that area were found increased levels of chemicals that affect the life of sea otter. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that on the Alaskan coast were not found evidence of chemical pollution.

Secondly, the author contends that what was a reason for endangering the sea otter that was the same for other sea mammals because there was evidence that not just the otter had declined, also, other sea mammals had disappeared. The article notes that this was a result of environmental pollution. Moreover, orcas could have a similar effect, but they hunted just big mammals such as whales. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that at the coast were not found any evidence of the bodies which predators had hunted. Furthermore, whales also had declined not just small mammals. This is a sign that humans were hunters.

Finally, the author states that scientists found an evidence that pollution hypothesis could explain the uneven pattern of the sea otter decline. The article establishes that according to scientists studying why in some areas population of the sea otter declined and in some area was stable was that oceans and environmental factors created uneven pollution in those areas where the population of the sea otter was declined. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this uneven pattern was not explained by the pollution hypothesis. This uneven pattern probably resulted from orcas who were hunters

In conclusion, the lecture and the reading are both about reasons why some sea mammals had declined. The professor effectively challenges the claims made in the article.
