summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the points that cloud seeding may have been effective in protecting crops from hail mentioned in the reading passage
In the reading passage, the author discusses several pieces of evidence that suggest the cloud seeding may have been effective in protecting crops from hail, while the lecture claims that what the passage state is not convincing and disputes those ideas presented in the passage with several proofs.
Firstly, according to the passage, it is suggested that laboratory experiments added silver iodide to cold water vapor and they observed light snow forming insted of hail pellets, which means that the cloud seeding is effective. On the contrary, the professor argues in the lecture that it is true that silver could cause light snow, but how could this result happen in real life? The sliver could prevent precipitation that forming the cloud including snow, rain and hail. In this case, there would be less rain on the ground, which would give rise to the risk of drought. Therefore, it could cause more damage to the crops.
In addition, the statement in the reading material indicates that the cloud seeding could be proved useful from several urban areas in Asian countries since it could control precipitation. On the contrary, the professor points out that what happeded in urban cities could not be easily repeated in village around United States. Because the urban has much air pollution that contains particles, the cloud seeding chemical could react with those particles and produce beneficial effect, but this method does not necessarily apply to US unpolluted farm areas.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that local studies also support the value of cloud seeding due to the fact that in some areas where cloud seeding was used reduced hail damage comparded to previous years. However, the speaker argues that the whole nation experiences less hail damage that year rather than the method-applied regions. This signified that this is due to the climate change occuring that year.
