Essay topics:

summarize the points made in the lecture , being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading states that the yellow-cedar decline in the northwest of America because of 3 reasons: attacking by insect parasites, brown bears who feeding from this tree, and progressive changes of weather. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author.
To begin with, the author noticed that maybe yellow cedar attacking by special insect and become destroyed but the lecturer rejects this idea and said that healthy yellow cedars are more resistant to insects than other trees types. For instance, the barks which live in the yellow cedar are had strong chemicals that are poisons to insects, so the health cedars not suffer from insects harms, therefore, we can say that insects damage sick trees that already harm before and will die anyway.
Secondly, the writer said that brown bears who feed from cedar damage this tree. However, the lecturer rebuts this idea and mentions that bears can harm some yellow cedars, but it’s not the main reason for the overall population decrease of these trees. Cedars are finding in Islands and the main lands of North America and there are no bears in islands but we see the cedars in islands are declined too, so for this issue bears cannot be responsible.
Finally, the author points that maybe progressive changes in weather decrease cedars populations, but the lecturer argues this and mentions that if freezing damage is responsible for the decline, we expect to see more trees dying in cold weather than warm. But the climate changes induce the roots to become more sensitive than used to be, so this is not the reason for killing them.
