The article introduces the topic of deforestation. Specifically, the writer discusses the benefits of deforestation. The speaker in the listening passage disagrees. He believes that the consequences of deforestation out ways its benefits and attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
First, In the reading passage, the author begins by stating that the clearing of a large area of land has provided an abundance of farmland. The professor in the listening passage refutes this point by saying that although there is an increase in population and so a need for increased farmland but deforestation should not be the solution. Rather farmers should go into alternative ways of farming for example hydroponics that do not require soil. And so, the rainforest should be preserved not destroyed.
Secondly, the author again claims that cleared land is not only used for farming but for the development of new residential areas. Again, the professor believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic. He holds that a short-term increase in the economy should not be the reason to destroy the rainforest. He also says that deforestation has displaced many animals, insects, and plants and that about 28% of the world’s oxygen is produced from the world’s ecosystem. Therefore, the clearing of large areas of forest should not be encouraged.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by saying that the forestry industry is an integral part of many national economies. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that workers in countries like Brazil, Thailand, and Indonesia where a large percentage of the population rely on deforestation as their source of income as mentioned in the reading passage are actually paid low wages to carry out these dangerous jobs and it is only the owners of the business that actually benefits.
In summary, both the author and the lecturer have conflicting views about deforestation. It is clear that they will have a problem finding a common ground.
