Summarize the points made in the lecture being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific theories presented in the reading passage. Theories to explain the jumping behaviors of young salmons.

The article introduces the topic of jumping young salmons. Specifically, the writer discusses some reasons why young salmons jump out of water. The speaker in the listening passage disagrees with the reasons mentioned in the reading passage. He believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic and attacks each of the claims in the reading.
First, the author begins by saying that young salmons jump out of the water to catch food like insects. The speaker, on the other hand, refutes this claim by saying that not all species of young salmon feed on insects and that a particular specie, called young Silka salmon feed only on zooplankton. He, therefore, says that there must be some other explanation for the reason young salmon jump out of water.
Secondly, the writer again says that young salmons jump out of the water to avoid predators. Again, the professor believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic. He holds that young salmons have developed a different strategy for escaping from predators which is by separating or swimming in a different direction. He further explained that since young salmons travel in groups, jumping at the same time when they see a predator is not feasible, and jumping out of water will make them visible to other predators like birds and bears. So, rather, young salmons escape from predators by swimming in different directions so as to confuse the predator.
Lastly, the writer concludes his argument by saying that young salmons jump out of the water to remove sea lice from their bodies. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that for a young salmon to remove one sea louse from its body, it is required that it jumps 50 times. Therefore, it will be required that it jumps many more times to get rid of more lice from its body. He says that this is too much energy required and that instead, the young salmon will use this energy in growing and getting stronger.
In conclusion, both the author and the speaker hold conflicting views about the reasons behind young salmons jumping. It is clear that they will have an issue finding a common ground on this issue.
