The reading and lecture are both about whether it is the right or responsibility of people to vote . The author of the reading state that every citizen must be responsible and should compulsorily vote to form democracy. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions it should be their preference to vote or not and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that compulsion for voting offer people an opportunity to numerous people in making strong democracy because of the huge number of votes. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer's position. He contends that there might be the possibility of not liking any of the candidate. Nevertheless, if they are compelled to vote then this will made their right unethical.
Secondly, according to the writing, there is plummeting in voter's participation. Additionally, the day is not so far when there would be only members of the candidates at the poll. Thus, making it compulsory to vote ensures majority of people participates in voting. Infact, this is what the true democracy wants. The speaker on other hand points out that obtaining few vote is not that bad instead this will question the legitimacy and thus lead to artificial law.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that there is a right of freedom in US. In addition, government work for people and people regulate the government however if they enforced the system of voting to be mandatory then elected official could claim greater legitimacy. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that some people might not have interest and do not care about the politics at all. Furthermore, they might be ill informed which eventually affect the electoral process.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on right to vote. The speaker effectively challenges the writer's argument.
