The reading and lecture are both about the benefits of professor giving talk on television. Whereas the lecturer suggests that neither professors, universities nor public benefits from the appearance of professors as guests on television news programs, the author of reading states that such appearances provide great advantage to all three of them. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.

First of all, according to reading professors get known as experts in their respective fields among large number of people unlike publishing in journals that results in only the scholars of their field being aware of the professor. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She says that their appearance does not create a good impression on other professors. They see him as someone who entertains, as a result the professor is not encouraged for attending conferences. Furthermore, she also mentions that it is difficult for the professor to carry out research.

Secondly, the reading states that universities’ name gets to be known by many people, it receives name and fame. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that such appearance consumes professor’s time, it takes time to think- what to present, rehearse, travel and look good. Thus, the professor cannot dedicate sufficient time to teach his students and for university’s tasks.

Finally, the reading claims that public gains knowledge. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that network does not want in depth knowledge. It only needs academic title and brief historical invention. Moreover, she feels that this can be provided through simple Television viewer who has done a little research.

In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about the impacts of professor appearing on television programs, the three main points made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
