In the reading passage, the author discusses several advanced hypotheses that are used to explain the steadily decline of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America. Firstly, according to the reading passage, it is suggested that the yellow cedar decline may be caused by bark bettle because this bettle is known to attack cedar trees and eat the wood according to the recorded instances of beetle attacks overwhelming and killing yellow cedar. In contrast, the professor argues in the lecture that it is not true. It is acknowledged that the health yellow cedar are resistanted to beetle owing to a kind of chemical poison relased by cedar trees. In this case, the beetle cannot damage the cedar trees so that it is not the cause of the tree's decline.
In addition, the statement in the reading material indicates that the brow bears may have caused the decline of the yellow cedar. Since the tree bark contains a high sugar content, bears claw at the cedars in order to eat the tree bark, which could critically weaken the trees. On the contrary, the professor points out that yellow cedar population's
been declining on islands off the cost where no bear is found. Therefore, the deline occurs with and without bears, the bears cannot be responsible.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that the yellow cedar decline should be attributed to gradual climate changes, which makes the roots now start growing in the late winter rather than in the early spring. As a result, this frozen root damage may be used to explain the decline of the yellow cedar. However, the speaker argues that this hypothsis is not true since more trees are found dying on the lower elevation.
