Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
In this set of materials, the reading passage talks about asteroids and providing three reasons to show that, asteroids would be the best colonization option for people. The reading part tries to say those reasons are not practical and have some downsides too.
The first reason mentioned in the passage is the low gravity which makes landing on asteroids surface safer than landing on Mars or the moon. The professor said although it is beneficial, there are some certain risks that come along. Low gravity will cause some health problems like losing muscle mass or bone density. So, in the long term, people will suffer from health problems.
The second reason provided by the reading is mining valuable metals. Some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals, so it would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The man said that it seems profitable but it is not the whole picture. Since the source of precious metals increases so it would decrease the market price of them and the mining costs would be high.
According to the passage, the last reason is, it is easy to reach asteroids. Some asteroids get closer to Earth than our Moon, so it would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from. The lecturer said, asteroids sometimes get closer but they do not stay at the same distance and they can go further away from Mars, and getting back from would be a challenge.
