TOEFL integrated writing: Altruism.

The lecture discusses the topic of altruism which had been previously introduced in the passage. It makes various points based on the study conducted recently on meerkats as well as makes some points about humans which contradict the points that were made in the passage.

Firstly, it states that the meerkat who act as sentinels for the entire meerket group eat before the group starts searching for food. Hence the point made in the passage that meerket sentinel stands ground without any food is opposed in the lecture.

Following which the lecture also contradicts the point of the passage that sentinels are always in danger while they are protecting others. However, the lecture stated that the sentinels are most likely to be the first ones to escape as they are standing near a burrow and thus they protect themselves while the alarm cry may gather other meerkats together which may gather the predator’s attention and may put them in a dangerous situation.

Lastly, it also opposed the point of the passage in which it was believed that humans do the selfless act of organ donation and receive nothing in return. The lecture stated that after donating an organ, the person will receive appreciation or approval from others which may increase their self worth which may be important to some people.

To conclude, these are the points that are made in the lecture which opposes the points in the passage.
