Both the passage and the lecturer offer opposing views on the altruism. While the text explains altruism as a selfless act, the professor gives contrary views on it.
First, the reading mentions that meerkats acts as standing guard in order to protect its group from the predators while other members gather food and eat it. Additionally, the guard meerkat makes crying sound to alert other members so that they can run to some safe place. In the contrary the lecturer states that before going for the guard duty meerkat eats well and thus, it's stomach is full in case attacked by the predator. Moreover, the professor explains that the guard meerkat can save itself more likely as it can hide in the nearby burrow on the other hand, the meerkats who are searching food are in grave danger to become prey of the predtaor.
Second, the article posits that human also do selfless acts such as donating their organ to the relatives and sometimes to the stranger. The speaker refutes this by saying that a person who is donating his kidney gets appreciation and laud from the stranger as well as from the society. This enhances the donar's self respect and these non materialistic rewards are very precious to the people doing altruism.
Clearly, the disparity exists between reading and listening, the lecturer gives more substantial points as compared to the article. Thus, the reading passage fails to justify its claim.
