TOEFL T P O 44 Integrated Writing Task

Both the passage and the lecture talk about a European silver coin found in the Native American settlement. The author claims that there are three main reasons that the coin is not genuine historical evidence. Instead, it is fake, and someone placed it there recently. On the other hand, the professor states that many archaeologists believe that the coin is not fake, and Native Americans came into contact with Norse and obtained it.
First, the passage states that there is a great distance between the Native American site and Norse settlements in far eastern Canada. So, they could not have any connections together. Nevertheless, the lecturer rejects the author's view and illustrates that Native Americans had other objects from far away places, and there are reasonable historical explanations. He mentions that Native Americans traveled great distances and collected interesting objects.
Second, the reading claims that no other coins have been found in Norse settlement, so they did not bring any coin with them. Nonetheless, the speaker opposes this idea and states that Norse people did not stay in Eastern Canada permanently. He claims that they eventually went back to Europe and packed up their valuable possessions with them. As a result, they brought back all of their coins to Europe.
Finally, the author mentions that Norse knew that Native Americans did not recognize their coins as money, and those coins would be useless. However, the professor refutes this idea by saying that although Native Americans did not use coins as money, they liked beautiful objects. He says that Silver was very appealing to them because of its beauty, and they could use them as necklaces or other types of jewelry. Therefore, Norse could use them for trading with Native Americans.
