The reading passage states that the ethanol cannot replace the gasoline and provides three reasons. Nonetheless, the lecturer disagrees with the ideas presented in the reading and made a counterclaim to each of the author' idea.
First and foremost, the article suggests that ethanol is not beneficial to solve global warming because it releases carbon dioxide when it burns just like the gasoline does. However, the professor refused this point by saying that the ethanol is made of plants such as corn, so, when it grows, they absorb the carbon dioxide as well. According to him, even though the ethanol releases a carbon dioxide, it would not be harmful to the environment like the gasoline.
Secondly, the reading contends that the production of ethanol requires other plants that are the main source of animal food that causes to reduce the food of the animals. On the other hand, the lecturer explained that the plant that mostly made of cell walls that are also not eaten by the animals can also produce the ethanol. He also argued that ethanol production has nothing to do with reducing the amount of food supply.
Thirdly and finally, the passage claims that the ethanol fuel would be way expensive than the price of gasoline fuel. In contrast, the professor argued that even though the assistance of the government helps to maintain the price of ethanol fuel, it could not really affect the price considerably. Besides, he also said that once enough people buy it, its price would probably go down because when the number of people using it increased by three times, the price also reduced by forty percent as well.
