Torreya tacifolia
Lately, there has been ton of debate surrounding as to what is the best way to prevent the decline of Torreya taxifolia the evergreen tree. The author of the passage suggests three ways to stop the decline of the tree. However, the lecturer in the listening passage was quick to point out some flaws in the proposed methods to preserve the endangered tree.
First and foremost, the author suggests that Torreya should be reestablished in the same location where it thrived for several years. The microclimate in the Northern Florida would be well suited for the tree. On the other hand, the lecturer opposed this idea. The lecturer, states that the microclimate areas have been affected by global warming and they are becoming dry, which would not benefit the Torreya tree that needs cooler and wetter climate.
Secondly, the author proposes an idea to move the Torreya to an entirely different location, far from the Florida microclimate to a cooler place where they would thrive. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that relocating the species might cause harm to other native species, the lecturer gives an example of the black locust tree. When migrated to another location they spread so quickly that they destroyed other plants and trees in the area.
Finally, the author claims that preserving Torreya in research areas might help stop the decline of the tree. Obviously, the author mentions a drawback to this idea. The lecturer, says that the tree would not be able resist the diseases. To resist diseases they need to have a diverse and a large population. However, the research centers would not be able to maintain such a large and diverse population.
