torreya tree in the state of Florida
The passage and lecture both discussed about torreya tree in the state of Florida. The author of the passage states that torreya a type of common tree in United States, started to decrease and will soon become extinct. However, the lecturer challenges the author's view and proposes three reasons.
First off, the author of the passage highlights that reestablishing torreya tree in the same place could be survival. He further proceeds to say that a microclimate would have great impact on survival of this tree. Not having been convinced, the lecturer points that these areas are being affected by changes in the climate of the larger region. It is because of global warming which contribute to the temperature and many areas across the region are becoming drier.
Moreover, the author of the passage declares that moving torreya tree to the completely different place far from microclimate will successfully resulted into its survival. On the contrary, the lecturer asserts that when people relocate a kind of tree to new environment, the tree spread so quickly and it killed of many plants species in new environment. Therefore, migration may have unpredicted outcome for new environment.
Finally, the author of the passage contends that torreya tree should be protected in the research center. The seeds can be closely controlled in the research center. By marked contrast, the lecture does not approve of the author's third reason and say that the population of trees in the research center will not be able to resist diseases. To survival the disease, it needs to be relatively large and it needs to be genetically diverse. Research center do not have enough capacity to keep a large and diverse population.
